Bank Statements, Check Images & Client Setup
When a client connects their bank account to Propio, Plaid can retrieve their bank statements as official PDF files — exactly as the bank produces them — for the banks that support it. Whether check images are included in those statements, and what setup is required on the client's side, varies significantly by institution. This article documents what to expect from each supported bank.
How Plaid Delivers Bank Statements
Plaid's Statements product retrieves the exact PDF that the bank generates, bank-branded and unmodified. This means the content of the statement (including whether check images are embedded) is entirely determined by what the bank puts in that document. Plaid delivers it as-is; there is no enrichment or modification on Plaid's end.
Statements are supported for depository accounts only (checking and savings). Credit card accounts are not supported. Up to 24 months of statements can be retrieved.
Which Banks Support Statement Transfer via Plaid

| Chase | ✅ Supported (Early Availability, contact Plaid to request access) |
| Bank of America | ✅ Supported |
| Wells Fargo | ✅ Supported |
| U.S. Bank | ✅ Supported |
| Citibank | ✅ Supported |
| Regions Bank | ✅ Supported |
| Capital One | ❌ Not supported |
| American Express | ❌ Not supported |

In addition to the institutions named above, Statements also supports several other banks and credit unions such as Fifth Third Bank, Huntington Bank, Navy FCU, and Truist. For the full list of institutions that support statements, review the Institution Coverage Explorer.
For banks that do not support statement transfer, transaction history through Plaid's Transactions product remains available (subject to each bank's history limits). See Transaction History & Account Differences for details.
Check Images by Bank
Whether check images appear in a Plaid-retrieved statement depends entirely on whether the bank's own statement PDF includes them. The behavior falls into three categories:
Checks Embedded — No Setup Required
-
Chase: Check images (front and back) are included in Chase's statement PDFs automatically. Images appear within 2 business days of a check clearing. Available for checking accounts only, not savings. No client action required.
Checks Embedded — Client Setup Required
-
Bank of America: Check images are included in the statement PDF when the client is enrolled in paperless (online-only) statements. For accounts already on paperless delivery, images are included at no extra cost and available for up to 18 months. The client needs to enable Online Only delivery in their BofA profile settings before images will appear in the Plaid-retrieved statement.
-
U.S. Bank: eStatements explicitly include front and back images of sent and deposited checks, with up to 7 years of statements retained. The client needs to enroll in eStatements via Statements & Documents → Paperless Preferences in U.S. Bank online banking. Once enrolled, check images are included automatically.
Checks NOT Embedded — Viewable Separately in the Bank Portal
For these banks, the statement PDF retrieved via Plaid is a transaction list only, check images are not bundled inside it. Images are available at the bank, but must be accessed separately by the client logging into their online banking portal.
-
Wells Fargo: Check images are available on the Account Activity page for the past 18 months, accessible by clicking into individual transactions. They are not included in the statement PDF by default. Embedding check images in the statement PDF is possible but requires contacting Wells Fargo directly and may incur additional fees. For most SMB clients, the Activity page is the practical access point. There is no native bulk check image export for small or mid-size business accounts. Images must be opened individually per transaction by both admin and guest (view-only) users. For commercial accounts via CEO®, the portal supports structured reporting and image retrieval, but bulk check image download as a file batch is a treasury management service requiring setup with WF's commercial team.
-
Citibank: Images can be viewed per transaction in CitiBusiness Online for checks posted within the last 180 days. View-only users can access statements, but check images per transaction are only accessible while viewing live account activity — not from downloaded documents. Bulk export is available for commercial clients only via CitiDirect's File Export/Delivery service, which requires formal entitlement setup by a Security Manager within CitiDirect.
-
Regions Bank: When viewing the statement online (not downloaded), clients can click into individual transactions to view front and back check images for up to 18 months. The distinction matters: downloading the PDF strips the images; viewing in-browser preserves access. For small business accounts, images can be viewed and downloaded individually. Bulk check image access and reconciliation tools are available for commercial accounts only via Regions iTreasury®, and requires contact with a Regions Relationship Manager or Treasury Management Officer.
Statements Not Supported via Plaid
-
For Capital One, American Express, Banco Popular, and Relay, Plaid's Statements product is not available. Check images cannot be retrieved via Plaid for these banks. Clients would need to access their statements and check images directly through their bank's online portal.
-
Capital One: Check images are viewable per transaction by clicking into individual transactions in Capital One's online banking or mobile app. View-only users can access statements, but check images are only accessible while viewing live account activity. Bulk image export is available for commercial accounts only as part of Capital One's formal Treasury Management product — covering up to 18 months of check images, with automated delivery directly to the business. This requires formal implementation and is not available for standard SMB accounts.
Client Setup Summary
For banks where check images are available but require client action, the setup is straightforward and one-time:
| Bank | Required Client Action |
|---|---|
| Bank of America | Enable paperless (Online Only) delivery in Profile & Settings → Paperless Settings |
| U.S. Bank | Enroll in eStatements via Statements & Documents → Paperless Preferences |
| Wells Fargo | No setup needed for Activity page access. To embed in PDFs: contact Wells Fargo directly (fees may apply) |
| Chase | No setup required — images included automatically |
| Citibank | Enroll in paperless statements via Citi Online |
| Regions Bank | Enroll in online statements via Accounts → Online Statements |
| Capital One | Enroll in paperless statements (required). |
In most cases, the accountant can walk the client through this in a few minutes during onboarding. For Bank of America and U.S. Bank in particular, confirming paperless enrollment before retrieving statements via Plaid will ensure check images are included.
Important Considerations
Plaid's Statements product is billed per statement retrieved, it is not included in the base Transactions connection. For firms that rely on check images as part of their reconciliation workflow, it's worth confirming paperless enrollment and image availability with the client before initiating a statement pull.
For banks where check images are not embedded in the PDF (Wells Fargo, Citibank, Regions Bank), the practical workflow for most SMB clients is to access images directly through the bank portal per transaction. Bulk or automated check image export is generally only available as a treasury management service for commercial-tier accounts — not the typical SMB accounts.
